RALLY cars aplenty where on show at Westport Park on Friday afternoon as competitors finished the NSW Great Endeavour Rally. Australian off-road racing legend Bruce Garland also celebrated with the drivers at an awards dinner on Saturday evening.

Termicide’s Slightly Dangerous makes a splash!
In total there were 14 flamboyant rally cars made up of teams from Gold Coast, Sydney, New Zealand and Coffs Harbour. They all trekked through the state’s remote and beautiful outback, shying away from the highway wherever possible to tackle the dirt roads. Their journey started at Coffs Harbour, before they travelled through Glen Innes, Wee Waa and to Taylors Arm, before finishing in Port Macquarie. Rally co-ordinator Paul Purcell was pleased with the event, which is run in Queensland and NSW each year.

“People with disabilities also go along and they all have a great time,” he said. “We like to start and finish in different places. For us, Port Macquarie is such a beautiful place.
“It’s so scenic which is what we wanted. A lot of the competitors will stay for a holiday as well and Port is a great place for that.”
The rally has raised more than $9 million since it started 28 years ago with funds raised going towards some very meaningful causes. Claire Hauser is a volunteer with Great Endeavour and was inspired to help out after undergoing an internship. “I absolutely love it. It’s my second rally and to hear everyone’s stories is very inspiring,” she said. “I’m a social worker by trade and have always wanted to help people in this kind of work. “To be apart of an event like this is so meaningful, especially as it makes a huge difference in peoples lives.”
